ABI Rehabilitation - Outpatient Services
Outpatient Services Information for Funders and Health Professionals
ABI Rehabilitation provides an Outpatient Clinic assessment Service to ACC and the Ministry of Health. The service will assess moderate-to-severe brain-injured clients who are based at home. It will:
- identify brain injury related sequelae or risk factors and
- make appropriate clinical recommendations for ongoing management.
The service is designed to enable cost-effective monitoring and review of clients with TBI. ABI guarantees the response timeframes unless otherwise negotiated with the case owner. Referrals will be responded to within one working day and outpatient appointments will be carried out within 10 working days of referral.
If the ACC case owner identifies post-brain injury sequelae, requiring assessment, treatment or intervention with one or more brain injury specialists, they may wish to refer to this service. The outpatient assessment services include:
- triage and one-stop-shop multi-disciplinary assessment of complex clients
- specialised MDT assessments and
- selected treatments on an outpatient basis if requested.
Referral for assessment by a specific discipline can be made including medical specialists (rehabilitation physician, neuro-psychiatrist, occupational health physician or other external specialists if required), clinical or neuro-psychologists, occupational therapists, rehabilitation nursing, speech therapists, physiotherapists, social workers and vocational specialists.
A number of targeted clinics have been established to provide multi-disciplinary assessment of specific needs including drug and alcohol abuse concurrent with TBI, spasticity, seizures, fatigue management headaches, balance, behavioural, social and cognitive changes. The assessment is different to a needs assessment in that it offers a tailor-made, coordinated assessment of a client with TBI, by a range of specialists or a MDT.
Where does it operate from?
The service covers any client within the trial area for the IRS contract. This includes Northland, Greater Auckland and Waikato areas.
The outpatient clinical appointments will be conducted in one of two locations (or elsewhere by arrangement):
- Level 1, 89 Grafton Road, Auckland.
- 180 Metcalfe Road, Ranui, Auckland. This facility is the main rehabilitation facility and most members of the MDT are based at this location.
Outpatient clinics in Hamilton and Whangarei may be arranged if required.
The location of the outpatient clinical appointment will be clinically based although other factors such as convenience and travel time will be considered.
