About ABI Rehabilitation
ABI Rehabilitation New Zealand Ltd specialises in rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury and stroke.
Our history
In 1996, people with brain injury in New Zealand were mostly ‘garaged’ without access to rehabilitation services. Max Cavit, our Managing Director, came to an agreement with ACC to develop services in NZ. Fifteen years later we have stand-alone facilities in the Auckland and Wellington regions, 200 specialist medical, nursing and therapy staff and support workers, and experience across all ages and injury severity.
The service has a sound research base with our own internal research team and links to two universities. and a strong emphasis on quality and individually tailored services.
Who we are
ABI Rehabilitation has brought internationally experienced staff to New Zealand to build on local skills. We strongly believe that our staff – and their skills and experience - are the best asset we have to offer. The service sees itself as a training and learning team and we try to contribute to building the field of brain injury rehabilitation across New Zealand.
What we do
The brain is an amazing and resilient organ, protected in a cocoon of fluid. But it can be damaged by an impact or stroke. Full recovery is often possible. But even a simple concussion can take up to six months. With a more severe injury, there is a lot that can be done but it can be a slow process. Our job is to guide the process of recovery, to help return the person back to a good life and help meet the person’s goals.
At the severe end of the scale, ‘recovery’ and ‘back to a good life’ may mean learning to live with a disability. Our job is to make the recovery as good as possible and work with those who fund services to ensure you have the supports you need.
Where we are
ABI Rehabilitation has a number of facilities. If you live in the North Island and require residential rehabilitation, it is likely you will be referred to our residential services facilities in Auckland or Wellington.

About our logo
ABI New Zealand’s logo incorporates the Māori Kopito pattern, which, as a symbol of the child in the womb, represents protection and nurturing. The diamond shape is symbolic of a star. Stars’ role in navigation represents guidance and direction. The weave pattern represents a binding of elements that are knitted together to co-exist, forming a strong, reliable and durable framework. Flax weaving, used primarily by those of Māori or Pacific ethnicity, is symbolic of safety and wellbeing.
Together, the weave, star and Kopito symbolism represent values that are at the heart of the services that ABI New Zealand provides every day: protection, security, guardianship, strength and a connection to the land of New Zealand and its Pacific cultural heritage.
