Information for Funders & Health Professionals

ABI Rehabilitation New Zealand is a contracted provider to ACC and the Ministry of Health. Referrals are accepted from anywhere in New Zealand. We also accept referrals from outside of New Zealand for injured people wishing to return home, for those covered by private insurance and for those who wish to self-fund their rehabilitation.

ABI Rehabilitation is a comprehensive specialist service focused entirely on acquired brain injury, TBI and stroke. ‘Comprehensive’ refers to the scope of the service we offer. These include both children and adults, mild through to severe injury, residential through to community services and early-intervention sub-acute services through to slow-stream residential care.

Residential Services

The Residential services are for clients with moderate/severe injury requiring short- to medium-term active rehabilitation with intensive medical and therapy input. The average length of stay is under 40 days. We work hard to get all clients ‘home’ and we achieve this for about 90% of our clients.

In the northern half of New Zealand, we are funded to begin rehabilitation planning while the client is still in hospital. Clients are accepted into our residential services as soon as they are medically stable and care is transferred to our specialist rehabilitation physicians and therapy teams.

Community Services

Concussion Services

ABI Rehabilitation provides clinic-based services in Northland, Auckland and Wellington for clients with mild traumatic brain injury (concussion). Referrals can be made by a GP or public hospital or come directly from ACC.

Community Assessment and Treatment Services

We hold a range of service contracts with ACC for community rehabilitation. Please contact us or ACC for information. Services we provide include complex or multi discipline assessments, neuropsychological assessment, behaviour management, vocational programmes and other individually tailored client-centered programmes. There are several specialist community providers with skills in neuro-rehabilitation. ACC will refer to the provider who best meets the needs of each specific client.

Outpatient Services

This service operates only in the Auckland region. Referrals are made by ACC case owners where it is felt that a client who has been through an intensive rehabilitation service requires a multi-disciplinary review. Please contact us or ACC for information.

Data Management and Research

ABI Rehabilitation uses a state-of-the-art web-based electronic client management system (CMS). This means that clinical information can be coordinated in real time across funders and health professionals at any phase of rehabilitation. Privacy and security management is at a high level.

Academic and clinical applied research is an integral part of our work. We maintain one of New Zealand’s most complete databases, which has been recognised as world class. We are always pleased to be able to collaborate and share information for research and we participate in a variety of local and international research programmes.
